Everything I Think About Starwalker

I love Starwalker. Probably more than is actually reasonable for someone who only caught up with Deltarune after the release of Chapter 5. Now I’m completely obsessed with Deltarune, but even before that, I was enamored with this funny star. About a year ago, I coded a feature on this very site where you have a 1 in 100 chance of Starwalker appearing on any page load (in desktop views only!). I’m pretty sure this hurt performance or data caching, but whatever, it’s funny.

In honor of multiple nights spent watching Deltarune analysis videos until 3AM, I too shall produce a Deltarune...something. This is... Everything I Think About Starwalker. We’re gonna go through every Starwalker appearance in the game thus far and see what ridiculous things we can extrapolate. Is there more to this creature than being a lovable running joke?

-The Original Appearance - Chapter 1

Starwalker’s legendary first appearance is in Chapter 1. In the Forest, after chasing down a Starwalker Bird, the player can ring this bell. The Starwalker Bird then seems to separate from its wings and walk away. Running back over to the other side, the ORIGINAL Starwalker appears. “These birds are Pissing me off. I’m the original Starwalker”

Already, I feel like there are some things to talk about. For one thing, what exactly happens when we ring the bell? If the bell isn’t rung, the Starwalker Bird doesn’t fall and the Original doesn’t appear. My theory is this: The bell actually summons the Original Starwalker, whose Dragon Ball-like aura and power cause these unoriginal birds to stop screwing around and drop to the ground. Starwalker’s originality will be a topic later on too, but taking his originality at face value, what can we say about the Unoriginal Birds? How do they differ from the original?

For one thing, they have dark eyes in the shape of a sparkle or diamond. Judging by the shading on the sprite, they may even be hollow, like holes, but I can’t say for sure. The birds have pointed legs, with one seemingly tucked behind the other. Oh, and they also have ENORMOUS WINGS.

The original Starwalker has rounded feet with somewhat humanoid looking legs, and white, I guess you could say ‘normal’ eyes, and I think he looks quite perturbed. He’s basically the exact same shape though, and a more typical, default yellow color than the Birds.

Now we have to make a bunch of stuff up. I don’t think there are other, original, yellow Starwalkers. Starwalker claims that he is THE original. If the birds are like, Corrupted Starwalkers or something, he would be the genetic original. So, the language suggests that these birds are some sort of imitation or copy, but where could they come from?

This brings up one of the most prominent and difficult questions about Starwalker, what the eff is he in the Light World? Some have theorized he is some random piece of glitter in Kris’ hair or something, but I genuinely have no idea. There are no clues to this, like at all that I know of.

Not to skip ahead, but when we take Starwalker into the Light World from Castle Town, he just doesn’t seem to have an item like Rouxls and Lancer do. And after that, Darkners tend to sort of show up whenever, and that ESPECIALLY goes for Starwalker, it’s like his whole thing. I don’t think there’s anything in the School Closet graphics that looks like it could be a Starwalker. So we’ll just have to drop this mystery for now. I apologize.

Back to Chapter 1, if you don’t meet Starwalker here in the forest, he just doesn’t show up for the rest of the game. No stars for you. I don’t think too many other things behave in the game like this, especially things that go back to Chapter 1, and double especially things that are running gags. The fact that Starwalker’s entire existence is kind of a secret only adds to the joke of his random appearances, and I think that’s all there actually is to it, meaning like, that’s the only reason it is a secret. Because it’s funny, right? If we think of like, Yuffie and Vincent in Final Fantasy 7, they are also secret characters, but they’re full party members with stories and weapons and limit breaks and stuff. Starwalker just shows up and is sometimes pissed off. So, that’s that. Buuut...

We could look at it through the lens of Starwalker’s originality, which I will elaborate on later, but I actually believe it IS sort of a inseparable, ontological quality about him. And if you do not observe his originality in his original scene he simply does not exist.

… Anyway in the Chapter 1 jail Starwalker says that this jail is pissing him off and that he’s the original Starwalker. From this I takeaway that Starwalker believes in freedom and probably not the prison system. I mean what else about a jail would piss him off? The lighting? I’ve kind of assumed at this point that he’s sort of like Optimus Prime, “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings”, but yeah, all we know for SURE from this scene is that this jail pisses him off. He says this again in Chapter 3 even though it’s a different jail.

Before moving on to Chapter 2, I’d like to mention the concept art of Starwalker that was shown in the Undertale 6th anniversary stream. The artwork here looks nearly identical to the sprite, as does the dialogue. But looking at the top we can see the enemy Starwalker Birds, just barely. I suppose we’ll never know who was drawn first. If someone were drawing (vaguely) from the top of the paper or canvas to the bottom, that could suggest that the enemy birds were actually made first, but who knows. I know in my own doodles I just kinda put whatever wherever. It seems not too implausible to me that the idea for a star/bird shaped enemy existed in Toby’s head, and in concepting that, getting the rough shapes out, the funny Starwalker emerged before being developed into the bird thing. Just another reason why he is the Original.

-I Will Also Join - Chapter 2

There are two big takeaways about the original Starwalker in Chapter 2. He’s a force for good (or just otherwise willing to ally himself with the Lancer Fan Club) and that he does have some kind of fighting power or abilities. Yes, really.

Starwalker appears in Castle Town along with most of the other Card Kingdom characters. I suppose it is worth noting there are no Starwalker Birds here, since they’re not battle enemies and Chapter 1 doesn’t have the Recruit system, so it’s just our boy. The birds aren’t gonna show up again for a good while.

In the Castle Town scene, Starwalker slides into frame (like Lancer) before shockingly revealing a walking animation. This animation doesn’t appear again in this Chapter. It’s a great visual joke that adds to the weirdness without being too in your face about it. Also nobody says anything about Starwalker’s existence here, it seems like the perfect time to Address Me.

Starwalker’s existence, assistance, and regular appearances are rarely commented on by anybody. Even in Chapter 3 where there are multiple, important appearances for Starwalker, nobody directly says Starwalkers name or like “Hey, it’s the original Starwalker!” It just doesn’t happen really until Chapter 5. It’s not that they don’t notice him or anything, exactly, just… no one comments on his presence. At first I thought, “Well they don’t wanna write extra dialogue for this character who is entirely optional”, but it happens so consistently that it must be part of the joke.

Starwalker does appear in your inventory after this scene, and you can see his sprite in the corner. You can’t interact with the item in any way, and after Rouxls and Lancer come out of your inventory, his sprite disappears. I guess that would be too much Starwalker, too accessible.

At the game hall, Starwalker will appear to join the party. This is the second time he seems to want to join the Fun Gang. Of course, he disappears in the next room. The fun thing I want to note about this scene is that Starwalker absolutely will show up here if you met him before, but Berdly only will if you select the option to give him the present. In this one specific instance, it’s almost like Berdly is more rare than Starwalker, which is weird.

Lastly for Chapter 2, Starwalker can be part of the super Thrash Machine thingamajig, along with any enemies you may have recruited in Chapter 2. So, Berdly has met Starwalker and maybe even talked to him. Almost everything that can go into the Thrash Machine is an enemy that you can battle. The two exceptions to this are the Hacker, and the Plugboy. The Plugboy is a little iffy because you never fight one that hasn’t become a Werewire, because they’re nice little sweetiepies. Berdly doesn’t bring like, the Addisons or the little Trashcan guy.

This is why I think Starwalker must have some kind of ability to fight or do battle, his presence does make the Thrashing Machine stronger, and he was, I guess, specifically recruited by Berdly. Unless Berdly like, stood in the middle of Cyber City and gave like a rousing speech or something, which is also possible, and Starwalker just decided to show up. No matter how you slice all that, Chapter 2 features Starwalker exclusively trying to team up and help out with the heroes, and he actually does at the very end! It’s kinda sweet.

- A True Rizzler Can’t Turn It Off – Chapter 3

Chapter 3 threw some major zingers into the Starwalker universe; he shows up a LOT. Well, relatively. The first time you can see him here is right when you get to TV World, run to the left and he will divulge that he will be the ...walker. To my best recollection and research, Starwalker is the ONLY other character that invokes the Word Art like Tenna. I think. I swear somebody did it in Chapter 4 or 5 as a quick throwback.

You could look at this new goal in a few ways, it’s a bit jarring at first but being the Word Art Star … walker is clearly different from being the original Starwalker, I mean it has to be, he can’t stop being original, right? Maybe he wants more attention and to be more frequently seen? He would be not unlike Tenna in that regard, which is sort of a cute parallel that doesn’t actually exist, but would be great if it did! This does go somewhere though, trust.

You know what else is in TV World? A PRISON! The same Goulden Sams from Chapter 1 reappear, and Starwalker says the line. As I noted previously he says this jail is ‘still’ pissing him off even though it’s a different place. Perhaps it’s like “there are no good prisons, so they’re all the same to me.”

Now comes the real nuclear bomb. After the fight with Rouxls, Lanino and Elnina, the two lament their throuple situationship craziness. Lanino specifically is the one who suggests "The only lover I need is someone I can share the sky with.”

Starwalker makes his move, with the walking animation returning at last. He says his name in yellow text. The three slide off together.

That’s right. STARWALKER IS A FUCKING RIZZLER. The idea here is super cute, Elnina represents the clouds, Lanino the sun, and so doesn’t a star fit so perfectly? But I can’t get over how effortlessly he presents himself. What a king! I salute you, Starwalker. And who knew Starwalker was ready for a relationship? I just love everything about this, it’s insane. I am very happy for everyone involved.

After the scene where Mike abandons Tenna, you can go way back and find Starwalker alone. I guess he finished rizzing up the polycule because he proudly announces to you "I was the star … walker”. I interpret this now as him being proud of his new relationship, he got what he wanted, right? He’s got some new people to bear witness to his originality and star-iness. He stared in a romantic comedy right after a boss fight.

During the boss fight with Tenna, if you get the Protect Ralsei minigame (which I haven’t, for some reason, both times I played through Chapter 3), Starwalker WILL BE THERE RIGHT NEXT TO KRIS HELPING THEM. UNAMBIGUOUSLY, COMPLETELY DIRECTLY, IRREFUTABLY HELPING KRIS DEFEAT TENNA. Lifting Susie by wire is probably not an easy task, so I think Kris should be extremely thankful for Starwalker here.

We learned a lot about Starwalker in Chapter 3, so Chapter 4 calms it down a little bit. But... Chapter 4 probably has my favorite appearance of all.

- Original Looking – Chapter 4

Let’s get the small appearance out of the way, Starwalker will appear in the 3rd sanctuary when the party is climbing on Jackenstein and the Roaring Knight knocks out the pillar. It’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment, which is perfect for Starwalker. Not much to read into this moment other than he is kind to continue assisting us.

In Susie’s Dark World, the 2nd Sanctuary, Susie and Kris come across a room. The sign at the front calls it The Gallery of Ancient Faces, a tablet that looks like a part of the prophecy (I guess it is one?) just calls it Gallery. The Organikk calls it an archaeological exhibit. This is important to note…

The statues here aren’t sculptures, they are petrified by age. One of the Organikks observes the statue of a Balthizards and comments “Only the hard carapace remains,” wondering what it might have looked like in its prime. Now it’s hard to analyze this concept exactly, the Wafers believe the Organikks are their ancestors, and vice-versa. It’s a neat little thing that goes through Chapter 4. For now, let’s just say that these statues are supposed to be aged in this specific Dark World. You can read a LOT more into this room (like the sign that has Kris’ name on it) but let’s leave that there.

So most of the statues in this room read ‘A familiar looking statue’, and mooost of the statues in the room are of the Wafers from the first church dark world.

One Organikk observes a statue of Starwalker and comments, “He looks so...original.” The inspection reads “An original looking statue…” This is also an in game source for Starwalker’s pronouns!

So the first time I played this I, admittedly, was not paying perfect attention, and I sort of assumed someone had made a sculpture of Starwalker, and that it looks original, which it does, but how could that be? If Starwalker’s originality is an immutable, irremovable part of him, as I believe it is, a sculpted statue would not capture that, right? It would inherently be an imitation or copy (this comes up in Chapter 5) So everything tells me IS the original, petrified, and he goes back to normal in the 3rd Sanctuary.

I also imagine that, in the context of this particular Gallery Room, no one has heard Starwalker speak. But his originality remains an observable quality regardless. This is why I think it is some sort of like, divine aura that he possesses. In the very near future we’re going to see some unoriginal Starwalkers in the same shape, who I think it would be safe to say, would not look original in this exact situation. Maybe. They would all turn grey I guess, so it could be possible to MISTAKE one for the original.

One more Chapter 4 note I would like to touch upon is that of a peculiar book you can read, also in the 2nd Sanctuary. It reads…

• And so wept the fallen star, making rivers with its tears.
• Then, slowly, from the bitter water, something grew.
It looked like glass.

A fallen star, hm? Could there be a greater role for Starwalker in the grand eyes of existence or the prophecy? Well, sadly, this book is probably about Shadow Crystals, so, uh. Even in my fanaticism, I cannot tell you with a straight face with current information that Starwalker has anything to do with Shadow Crystals or willpower.

...but what is Starwalker’s place in the prophecy? The fact that he can simply not be there with no major differences does offer questions as to the prophecy’s power. This is also strange, isn’t it? The prophecy ‘knows’ that Lancer is going to call Ralsei toothpaste boy and about Jockington’s beard, can it account for Starwalker? He might be one of the only things that apparently is outside of the prophecy's power. Maybe. An all knowing prophecy is kind of challenging.

If we go back to our Chapter 1 idea that he perhaps literally does not exist if not observed, then, in that series of events, there's obviously no need for the prophecy to account for a non-existent entity. If we believe that he DOES exist somewhere and we just don’t see him or he didn’t join us, then yeah, what the heck? He definitely is involved with the Heroes, maybe not to the extent Lancer is but like, maybe not THAT far behind, right? He's everywhere in Chapters 3 and 5 especially.

Naturally, we didn’t see EVERY tablet of the prophecy in Chapter 4. Just a decent chunk of it to drive home the point about how accurate it is. So, uh, yeah, Starwalker’s whole existence being a schrodinger's-cat sort of situation is kind of interesting in the context of an all powerful, true, correct prophecy.

Tropissing Me Off - Chapter 5

Chapter 5 is like The Silmarillion of Starwalker lore. It dwarfs nearly everything else up to this point, and continues the romance plot found in Chapter 3. It’s a time of tremendous change for the Original.

He’s all over Castle Town. The first spot is by the Great Door where he’s hanging out with the Trashy Trio in his perturbed sprite. Speaking to him while they’re there elicits his catchphrase. Speaking to Super Nubert and the others cause them to disappear as if they’re being spared. Starwalker will then comment “I don’t know why they disappeared. Its scary” using the noun form of its and not the contraction. So he almost said something completely normal but the Starwalker charm slipped in. Maybe this is why he doesn’t do battle (so far), seems like being spared kinda freaks him out a little bit.

If you do the climbing race minigame in Castle Town and win in under 25 seconds, Starwalker appears as the reward. Rouxls sort of refers to Starwalker as Kris’s best friend, though it’s a little ambiguous here as Rouxls is sort of referring to Ralsei as like a funny fake out for Starwalker to show up.

Lastly, in the Dojo area, Lanina and Elnina are there along with a ‘shrunken down Starwalker’. That’s what the wiki calls this, but I have another theory. Elnina comments that this Love Dojo is only for the most stable of throuples.

When I first saw this room, my immediate thought was that they had a baby. And I still believe that. We’ve established that Starwalker is a rizzler, but he’s also usually making scarce appearances. You’re telling me he’s at the top of the mountain climbing game, AND at the great door? Hmm! We’ve also never seen him shrink, and this baby Starwalker doesn’t speak. Obviously, because it’s a baby! And this baby grows up across Chapter 5 (even though Chapter 5 happens in a day). It sounds crazy but like, okay please let me know if you thought this was something else.

Starwalker appears in the Cafe next, if you do the break with Green and Orange. Ralsei, Susie, and the original Starwalker “I also joined” were apparently having a feast right behind Green. Orange, upset that she wasn’t actually alone with Green, sobs “I don’t care! I don’t care if you have Starwalker… I…I have my own!”

A tiny, unshaded Starwalker then flies out of Orange and starts vibrating for no known reason. Ralsei and Susie say, under their breath, “That’s not original…”

WHAT A SCENE! We have confirmation that Susie and Ralsei DO recognize the original Starwalker’s originality. Also Starwalker can eat. I guess. He can eat and reproduce. He might have just been back there socializing but ehhhh. Orange also desires her own Starwalker, or at least is willing to keep one around. It’s possible she specifically wants to be friends with him too. I know I would! The little Starwalker doesn’t speak, but it has its own sprite, which is funny because they shrank the normal Starwalker movement sprite in Castle Town. So I’m guessing this one is some sort of plastic figure or wood carving.

At the top of the castle, right before Green’s shop, heading back left will give us our guy. “It was a long journey but now it is time”, he then digivolves and claims... “The final Starwalker”, with a new spikier appearance. The Deltarune wiki suggests that this is a likely reference to the Final Starman from Earthbound, which I definitely agree with.

Now, with the release of the Deltarune Summer Newslater post-Chapter 5, it’s been outright stated in plain english that this is the last of the ‘wacky adventures’ which is a phrasing I take issue with, but that’s the idea. This makes me wonder if Chapter 5 will actually be the last time we see the Original Starwalker. I mean, maybe we could see Final Starwalker, but the mere suggestion of Finality here scares me. If you take the Final adjective as seriously as I take the Original, this would probably be it. Time will tell. There’s still more in Chapter 5 though, so we’ll worry about what happens later.

At last, a regional variant of Starwalker appears! In the Garden zone you can pick up a Pink Coin and chase down a tye-dye colored Starwalker bird. Ringing the bell, just like Chapter 1, returning to the left side shows off a new Starwalker who, tbh, is giving some bisexual pride vibes.

“These tropical birds are Tropissing me off. I am the Tropical starwalker." We don’t know what this one’s pronouns might be, and I kinda doubt we’ll ever know for sure, so I’ll just call them Tropical and use they/them. Tropical has the power to invoke this lovely looking rainbow text and doesn’t claim to be original, only tropical. Since everything in this scene is set up to mirror the situation in Chapter 1, I think we can apply pretty much the same ideas:

The bell summons Tropical (they’re not there when you enter the area) and scares off the bird. There’s also one notable design difference beyond the color scheme, and that’s the little...thing on the top of their head. I kinda think it looks like a really tiny heart, but it also sort of resembles a downwards arrow. It’s...probably supposed to be a little tuft of hair? Maybe they’re leaves? Like a little palm tree? It would be a shame to not see any more alternative versions of Starwalker, but if this is the only one we get, I suppose I can die happy.

In the VERY last scene of Chapter 5, when Suzie returns to Castle Town, Starwalker is among the denizens to greet her. Now, wait a minute, if the original Starwalker evolved into the Final Starwalker, who is this? Well, this is the baby Starwalker from the beginning all grown up! How did a baby Starwalker grow up so fast? Well, it was born pretty fast too, so it’s possible that Starwalkers have accelerated reproduction of some kind. They’re like the Clone Troopers in Star Wars.

We did it! Yay! If you actually read this entire thing, I am sorry, but I hope you have at least one new thought about Starwalker that you didn't before. If you’ve ever made Deltarune fanart, videos, animations, funny posts, fan dubs, music covers, basically anything, I think you’re really cool. I'm very happy to be a part of this amazing community, however small and insignificant I may be!
